Reading Buddies Celebration (with pajamas!!!)

On Wednesday afternoon (June 3) we will celebrate our final get together with our fourth grade reading buddies.  As a group, we decided that popcorn, pajamas and hot chocolate sounded like a fabulous combination to end the year right :)  Please send your child to school on that day with pajamas in a separate bag that they can change into after lunch.  We will not be wearing the pajamas all day, only for the afternoon as it is not a school wide event.  Thanks so much!

Summer Reading!

As the school year comes to a close, I wanted to convey my exuberant support of summertime reading.  We have grown by leaps and bounds this year in first grade regarding our ability to read fluently and comprehend a wide variety of texts.  Let's keep the momentum going!  Our fantastic librarian, Ms Brooke kindly compiled some very helpful information to spark your summertime reading:

Physics!

1DS got the chance to head upstairs into the senior high to see physics in action.  The AP Physics class demonstrated many different experiments and we were delighted!  Pendulums, falling eggs, marbles and monkeys, electric circuitry, and a potato as conduit were just a few of the many amazing things we witnessed.  A big thanks to Mr. Baker and his fantastic students/teachers!

Character and Story Elements Study

We have begun a new unit in both Reading and Writing Workshop.  As we read our way through the wonderful "Henry and Mudge" series by Cynthia Rylant, we are going to be learning about story elements such as character, setting, plot, problem and solution.  We first learned to distinguish between fiction and realistic fiction and then began to look deeply into the actions of our characters searching for clues that would reveal both their inside and outside characteristics.

OOOooooo... Eeewwwww... Oobleck!!

1DS had a blast exploring matter last week as we sought to find out whether the green, gooey substance we made from scratch was a solid or a liquid.  It certainly exhibited qualities of both...at times flowing and taking the shape of its container and at others, holding its own shape with identifiable sides and corners.  But not for long!  It moved from one to the other, with oozing ease!
