Read to Feed Thank You!
A huge THANK YOU for all of the Read to Feed reading logs and donations that have been turned in today! Our goal of raising enough money to get a heifer for a family in need certainly seems to be well in reach :). Thanks again for all you do to support us here at school!

Sight Word Practice
Here you will find a sample of some of the practice we do on a daily basis to learn to read, write and utilize our first grade sight words. By the end of first grade, students are expected to have mastered a list of 100 sight words. For this reason, we practice. Ten words are introduced at a time and I have begun to send home the small packet on Wednesday evenings so that students may continue to practice for the spelling test on Thursday. Hope you find this helpful!
Diving into Nonfiction!
We took a book tour through a jumble of titles, all a mishmash of fiction and nonfiction titles. Our mission? To determine which were fiction and which were nonfiction. We looked closely at things like pictures (real photographs or cartoon illustrations), captions, labels, the presence of an index or glossary, diagrams or charts. After a lot of sleuthing, our two piles were complete. Good job readers!

Our First Publishing Party!
All first grade students gathered outside on the basketball court in a "wagon wheel" to share their first published piece of writing. We have been working on our small moments stories for many weeks now and were so proud and excited to share them with students from all three classes. Afterwards, we created some fancy author's hats by weaving "pencils" into a paper visor and topped it off with a small badge proclaiming, "I am a writer!"
